In every episode of Staying Wild, we go beyond the ordinary, stepping into the wild edges of performance, mindset, and life itself.

Why Confidence Slips… Even for the Best Athletes, Individuals + Teams

Bandura, the godfather of self-efficacy, showed us that confidence grows as we gather mastery experiences.

So why do world-class performers choke under pressure?

One of my pro triathletes, one of Norway’s best, was breaking records and winning races. Yet he genuinely believed he was a slow swimmer. His brain was so loyal to that belief, it hid all the evidence to the contrary.

Result?

He swam slower than he was capable of.

Here’s the kicker: your brain isn’t malicious. It’s obedient. It follows the orders you give it, wiring itself around your strongest beliefs.

Tell your brain “I’m not good at this”?

It will dutifully hide the wins, highlight the failures, and hardwire self-doubt.

That’s the Low Confidence Feedback Loop at work.


The Low Confidence Feedback Loop

It starts with a thought: “I’m not good enough.”

That creates a feeling: shame, fear, embarrassment.

Which leads to actions: holding back, not asking questions, focusing on failures.

Your brain then edits your reality to serve up more “proof” of inadequacy:

  • One fall on the slopes = I’m a terrible skier.

  • Three out of six employees skip congratulating you = the meeting was a disaster.

Each spin of the loop reinforces the belief. Your brain literally rewires itself around doubt.

Round and round we go.


Swap the Glasses

Here’s the brain hack: swap the self-doubt glasses for confidence lenses.

When you shift your thoughts → your feelings change → your actions follow → your brain highlights success → the belief strengthens → the brain wires itself.

That’s the High (+ Wild) Confidence Feedback Loop.

And the best part? This rewiring doesn’t take years. It can start in minutes.


Proof That Confidence Can Be Built Fast

Confidence isn’t just “earned over time.” Thanks to neuroplasticity, the brain can rewire instantly.

  • Think of how love can flip to heartbreak in a single moment.

  • In my workshops, I have people recite their phone number backwards… within minutes, they feel their brain adapting in real time.

Confidence works the same way. Forget endless squats and deadlifts — train your brain like a muscle.


3 Wild Method Tools to Rewire Confidence

  1. Wild Confidence Scripting
    Recall a time you felt unstoppable. Write down how you looked, sounded, felt, walked, and acted. Anchor it daily in your habits, posture, words, and choices.

  2. Demands vs. Resources Exercise (Gucciardi et al.)
    Write down:

    • Demands of the situation.

    • Resources you already have (skills, training, support).

    • Evidence you’ve succeeded before.

    • Immediate actions.
      → This flips “I can’t” into “I’ve got this.”

  3. Pre-Performance Boosters
    Research (Cohn et al., 1990; Moran, 1996; Marlow et al., 1998) shows that simple reminders and scripts before performing increase confidence and reduce choking under pressure.


Final Thoughts

Confidence isn’t something you’re born with. It’s trained. Fast. Through:

  • Switching self-doubt into confidence loops

  • Anchoring into past evidence of strength

  • Training your brain like a muscle

  • Asking the “stupid” questions anyway
